Visitor's Guide to Birmingham

VISITOR'S GUIDE TO BIRMINGHAM ( Alabama ) First, you must learn to pronounce the city name. It's 'Bur/min/ham'. Driving Information: Burmin'ham has its own version of traffic rules... 1. The truck with the loudest exhaust goes next at a 4-way stop. The truck with the biggest tires goes after that. (Note: Blue haired ladies driving anything have right-of-way anytime. 2. To find anything in the city it is required that you know where Malfunction Junction is... which is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. It is one of only two 'cloverleaf' formation interchanges in the world. We invented it and only one other city was stupid enough to implement it again... Atlanta- making them dumber than we are. 3. The morning rush hour is from 6:00 to 10:00 AM. The evening rush hour is from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. Friday's rush hour starts Thursday morning a runs thru Saturday Noon. If the term 'merging delays' is ever used by the person reporting the traf...

Horton Mill Bridge

Image
Built in 1935, this is one of the highest covered bridges in the nation, standing at 70 feet above the Black Warrior River. It is also one of three which still exist in Blount County, Alabama's Covered Bridge Capital and home of the Covered Bridge Festival each fall. I can go the "back way" to my home town by Highway 75 and have passed by this bridge my entire life. I remember stopping as a child loving walking around the old bridge and thr river bank. I stopped by on my way home last time to show my kids and snap a few pictures. The old bridge was build in 1935, redone in the 70's, but is now closed to traffic. The smell of the old bridge was captivating and a reminder of my past....and an era past. Oh, if only I had met a sexy photographer there.... Oh, wait....that is Madison County. (just kidding , of course)

Monday Reflections of the Weekend

Image
What a great Blogging weekend.....and family time and FUN. Friday began with the Friday Fashion Fiesta from Big Mama. I met so many new faces. AND HAD so many visitors. Big Mama, you a a ratings BOOSTER! Storms and hail on Friday afternoon left everything smelling fresh, wonderful and fragrant...and oh , so green . We went out to dinner and took a nice drive, seeing many power outages and some storm damage. No tornadoes, THANK GOD. Saturday was a nice morning- read gnome hunt clues, went to a baseball game, more clues and gnome hunting.......FUN FUN FOUND! Hewy is good for the visitors too! 2 record days ! Hewy Tucker Penhale - the name suggested by blog visitors-the gnome now resides in my flower bed by the front porch. We went to church and out to Sunday lunch yesterday and then had a nice quiet afternoon in the house- covered in a blanket since it is BLACKBERRY WINTER. ---A (mainly Southern) term used to describe a brief period of cold weather that coincides with the time the black...

Alabama Weather

Gotta know you live in Alabama when it was 75 degrees yesterday and 28 degrees today! Ah....I do like the change in seasons, but the LAST 2 years, we spent every weekend at the beach in February and I had a great tan. Did I say I missed living in Florida?

Alabama Snow

Well, I have lived in Alabama all my life (except for the aforementioned vacation for several years to Florida)--- and snow is a rare occasion. Only every 15 years or so do we get any to accumulate. My son went to sleep with the radar pulled up on his computer and was so excited. Determined to wait up for the snow. He awoke early to find NO SNOW. He was so disappointed. He continued to read the radar and came back and said we were covered in blue and a big blob was still out there. He is a meterologist!!!! As accurate as any when it comes to Alabama snow. Pretty soon snow was falling hard and continued to do so for awhile. Long enough for me to get some great Snow shots. Now is is just past noon and the fun and the snow is over....gone as quickly as it came. It was beautiful while it lasted, and like most good things in life- was gone too quickly. Alabama Sleds----- We have plenty of beach stuff.... so these boys found a hill and put it to use! Life passes by too fast..... just like th...

My First Blog

I have been inspired by some local bloggers to begin my own. I have been a stay home mom since we moved here and I have learned so much about our community by the local bloggers. I decided to start my own. I will tell about our day to day life- my 2 children- Fred, who is 8- a black belt in TKD and a Sk8ter boy, and Sally, the 4 year old drama queen, I mean princess. My husband, Alabama Al, has called them those nicknames their whole lives. I am getting together photographs, rather sorting through thousands to choose some- to post soon. I do portraits and have a photography business...or had one in Florida where we lived- and hope to begin one here in my new home.
